Prevent Backover Accidents

Every year, thousands of children throughout the United States are killed or seriously injured because a driver backing up didn’t see them. A backover incident typically takes place when a car is backing out of a driveway or parking space. Back over tragedies change the lives of parents, families, and communities forever.

Prevent back over accidents by following some of the tips below:

  • Walk completely around your vehicle to check for children and pets prior to moving a vehicle.
  • Do not allow children to play in parking lots or unsupervised.
  • Create habits so a child is directly supervised when someone is leaving the home. Many young children will try to run after the adult who is leaving in the car and this is where many tragedies occur.
  • Roll down your window when backing up so you can hear if someone is yelling for you to stop.
  • Find these tips and many more on the Back Over Fact Sheet at KidsandCars.org.
